I had visited well over 60 countries at that time and then as now and like most others I had a good idea of what to expect before I arrived. For many reasons I am not a fan of the USA which I am happy to expand upon at another time, but I do believe it is the finest destination in the World for a Road Trip.
So just what is a road trip?
Remember when it was possible to travel almost at will? To go where we wanted to go and whenever we wanted? Finances and time permitting of course!
I always thought that one of the great delights when travelling was to stumble across somewhere or something which was totally unexpected and which, at the fear of sounding dated, totally blew my mind.
The famed Golden Triangle is a region of Northern Thailand close to Myanmar and Laos.
Like most regions it is not delineated by lines on a map but is an area associated with a way of life or historical events. In a similar manner you will find no lines on a map marking America’s ‘Rust Belt’ or the ‘Midwest’, England’s ‘Wessex’ or the ‘Scottish Highlands’ but everyone knows where they are there because of either a distinct way of life or an association with past events. In the end there were just 5 of us who flew out of Bangkok heading for Kota Kinabalu in Sabah via a change of flights in Kuala Lumpur.
And just why were we heading off to Borneo in the first place?
I am very conscious that although I have close connections to Beautiful British Columbia in Canada I have never written an article that has given me the opportunities to extol the virtues of both Vancouver as a city and BC as almost certainly the most scenically attractive part of North America.
